Michael Quinlan is emeritus professor at the University of New South Wales. His research focuses on work organisation and regulatory aspects of occupational health and safety (OHS), including psychosocial hazards, the underlying causes of workplace fatalities and the impact of workplace death on families. He has undertaken inquiries and prepared multiple government reports on OHS including the NSW Mine safety Review (2004-5), Beaconsfield mines fatality (2006), Pike River Mine disaster (reports for the Department of Labour) and the Grosvenor mine explosion (2020 for the Board of Inquiry) as well as serving on expert advisory bodies following Pike River. He is the author of numerous books and scientific articles including the influential Ten pathways to Death and Disaster: Learning from fatal incidents in mines and other high hazard workplaces (Federation, 2014). He is currently collaborating in a large research project on the OHS implications of algorithmically managed work. Michael is a NSW Director of Mates in Construction, a peer-to-peer suicide prevention body. He is a fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia.
