Indonesia and Australia are working together toward building the two countries as an economic powerhouse in the region. A cornerstone of this evolving partnership is the deepening collaboration in the development of critical minerals and the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem. This area of cooperation is not only timely but vital, as the world accelerates its shift toward cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions.
This shared vision has been declared at the highest level by both leaders during the Indonesia–Australia Annual Leaders Meeting (ALM) in 2023, and reinforced in the the 2025 Indonesia–Australia ALM, where both leaders welcomed positive developments on the collaboration to promote the electric vehicle ecosystem growth, including battery manufacturing and critical industries in Indonesia and Australia. This commitment have also been laid out in a more targeted approach under the Plan of Action on the Indonesia–Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership 2025, signed by both Foreign Minister of Indonesia and Australia.
By harnessing the complementary strengths, from Australia’s critical mineral resources to Indonesia’s manufacturing capacity and market potential, both countries can drive sustainable economic growth, create new industries, and position both countries at the forefront of the clean energy transition.
